Founded in 1502 by Nicolas De Ovando, Puerto Plata reached its’ peak in popularity near the end of the 19th century. It was at that time that the city became one of the most important commercial centers of the island. But in the early 1900’s most of the country’s commercial activities moved to Santo Domingo. It is only in the 1970’s with the arrival of the first tourists that Puerto Plata started its recovery.

Puerto Plata offers you main attractions like: Fort San Felipe which was built in the 16th century, the center of town with its Victorian gingerbread homes, the Brugal rum factory where you can see the bottling system of rum, the Amber Gallery and a beautifully renovated oceanfront boulevard.

Puerto Plata’s neighbouring town of Sosua, which is barely a 20 minute ride away from Puerto Plata, offers you one of the most popular beaches of the island with its soft sand and clear waters. Sosua was a fishing village until the 1940s when it became a refuge for some 100 East European Jewish families who settled in El Batey on the eastern side of the beach. Fifty years later Sosua’s popularity as a resort put this small town at the forefront of the region’s economy once again.

The Playa Dorada complex offers 15 different all-inclusive resorts. It offers an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, casinos, pubs, discos and even a theatre!
