Puerto Plata Shopping
Be sure not to leave the Dominican Republic without bringing home our local souvenirs.
Rum
Rum is extremely inexpensive in this country. Take home your legal amount of any one of the many types available. The top 3 brands produced in the Dominican Republic are Bermudez, Brugal and Barcelo.
Vanilla
Vanilla, used for cooking, is also inexpensive and can be purchased in many of the boutiques in town or at your hotel.
Amber
Amber, a fossil resin, which is considered a gem, is formed from the sap that comes from trees when it dries and hardens. It’s available in a variety of colors, and Dominican Amber has a higher concentration of fossils and insects than anywhere else in the world. We include some of the best places to purchase amber in our City Tour of Puerto Plata, which is a half-day tour, or a full-day tour when it is combined with Sosua beach in the afternoon and a complete Dominican buffet at lunchtime.
Carnival Masks and Paintings
Elaborate papier-mâché masks that are worn by Dominicans during their festivals and carnivals as well as paintings that depict their times of the Tainos.
Mamajuana
A blend of spices, leaves, honey, and different alcohols such as wine and rum. Many Dominicans believe in its effects as an aphrodisiac.
Cigars
Even Cubans have an affinity to Dominican cigars. Some of the local brands are Leon Jimenez and Montecristo.
Coffee
Enjoy the hand picked beans of the Dominican Republic. Normally processed within a 24-hour period to ensure freshness in every bag.
